How to Maintain Painted Cabinets for Long-Lasting Beauty

Freshly finished kitchen cabinets after painting

A sprayed Cabinet Painting finish can look factory-new for years, but a few daily habits make a real difference in how long that finish actually lasts under normal kitchen and bathroom use.

What to avoid

Skip abrasive sponges, harsh degreasers and anything with bleach directly on painted cabinet doors, since they can dull the sheen or wear through the topcoat over time. Excess standing water around the sink cabinet and dishwasher area is another common source of early wear.

Avoid hanging damp towels directly on cabinet doors for long stretches, since trapped moisture against a painted surface can eventually soften the finish.

What actually works

A soft cloth with mild soap and water handles day-to-day grease and fingerprints without damaging the finish. Wipe up spills and splatters near the stove and sink promptly rather than letting them sit.

Touch-ups are easier than most homeowners expect. If a corner does get chipped or scuffed, a small amount of matching paint can usually fix it without redoing the whole door.

Pro tip

Add felt bumpers to doors and drawers if they didn't already have them. They prevent the small chips that happen from cabinets closing hard against each other over time.
