How Often Should You Repaint the Exterior of Your Home

Freshly painted home exterior with clean trim lines

There is no single repaint schedule that fits every house. Siding material, sun exposure and how well the last job was prepped all change the timeline. As a Hendersonville Exterior Painting crew, we get asked constantly how long a fresh coat should actually last, so here is what we tell our customers.

What typically determines the timeline

Most vinyl and fiber-cement siding holds a quality coat for 7 to 10 years, while painted wood siding, trim and shutters usually need attention closer to the 5 to 7 year mark. South- and west-facing walls that take the most direct sun tend to fade and chalk faster than shaded north-facing walls on the same house.

Western North Carolina adds another variable: the swing between humid summers and freezing winters puts extra stress on caulking and paint film, especially around windows, trim joints and anywhere moisture can sit against the wood.

Signs it's time for a new coat

Chalky residue that rubs off on your hand, visible fading compared to a spot protected by a shutter or planter, cracking or peeling paint, and soft or discolored wood around trim and window sills are the clearest signals. Caulk that has pulled away from joints is also worth flagging, since it lets water behind the siding long before the paint itself looks bad.

If you're on the fence, a quick walkthrough during a free estimate will tell you whether you need a full repaint now or can reasonably wait another season or two.

Pro tip

Check the sunniest side of your house first. If it's chalking or fading, the rest of the exterior usually isn't far behind, even if it still looks fine from the street.

A pressure wash and a close inspection before painting adds years to the finish either way, which is why every full exterior painting package we run includes both. If your siding is showing any of these signs, request a free estimate and we will give you a straight answer on timing.
